If you’re a fan of Hot Bench, you’re likely familiar with the name Yodit Tewolde.

The Eritrean-American woman has been a television personality for many years now, and she’s currently one of three judges featured on Hot Bench.

Who Is Yodit Tewolde?

Yodit Tewolde is an Eritrean-American criminal defense attorney who has had plenty of other jobs as well. She worked as a prosecutor, legal analyst, journalist, and television personality.

She was originally born in Sudan when her parents were fleeing the Eritrea-Ethiopia conflict, and when she was only an infant, her family immigrated to the United States, specifically Dallas, Texas.

Texas is where Tewolde earned her BA in English with a minor in Communications, and she later earned her Juris Doctor degree, a professional doctorate in law, from Southern University Law Center.

An Overview of Yodit Tewolde’s Career

Though Tewolde started her legal career clerking, she later worked as an Assistant District Attorney in Dallas County, which kickstarted her long career in law.

During her early career, Tewolde was recognized by the National Bar Association as one of the nation’s top lawyers under 40. She also appeared a lot on TV as a legal analyst, including major networks like MSNBC, CNN, HLN, and Fox News.

Not only that, but she also hosted ‘Making the Case’ on Black News Channel and was a morning anchor for Court TV.

Is Yodit Tewolde Married?

Despite her frequent media appearances, Yodit Tewole has been keeping her personal life private. While a lot of online articles speculate about her marital status, she hasn’t publicly confirmed or denied that she’s married.

In 2020, Yodit Tewolde posted a photo of herself running with a man on social media, sparking speculation. The man is BJ Coleman, host of the Image Elevators with BJ Coleman podcast, who invited Yodit Tewolde to appear on his show. The two are not in a relationship.

Tewolde has always practiced discretion and prefers to keep her private matters separate from her public appearances, so we may never get that answer.

Yodit Tewodle’s Role in Hot Bench

In 2022, Yodit Tewolde joined the panel of judges on Hot Bench, the syndicated court show created by Judge Judy Sheindlin.

Today, Tewolde is still on that panel with Rachel Juarez and Michael Corriero. They preside over small-claim cases, deliberate behind the scenes, and then deliver verdicts.

While Corriero is departing the show after Season 11 ends, both Tewolde and Juarez signed on for Season 12, meaning we’ll keep seeing Tewolde on the screen for a while.

About Hot Bench

Hot Bench isn’t your average TV show. It’s a panel-based courtroom show that’s been running since 2014. It features three judges who hear real small-claim cases, discuss them in chambers, and reach a verdict that’s later announced.

The show has been nominated for a Daytime Emmy and is one of the top court shows in syndication. It currently has 2000 episodes on air, and it’s been renewed for 2025 through 2026.

As it is with most court shows, the litigants choose to appear on the program but forgo their actual lawsuit in return.

Yodit Tewolde’s Public Statement on Women’s Independence

While Yodit Tewolde hasn’t made a standout quote on women’s independence, she constantly strives to empower women. In many interviews, she’s talked about overcoming stereotypes and striving for equity.

As a Black, immigrant, female criminal defense attorney who appears on television, she’s the best person for the job.

Final Thoughts

From her early days in Dallas courtrooms to her current role on Hot Bench, Yodit Tewolde has always been a solid example of an independent voice, especially for women, immigrants, and communities of color.

She keeps the details of her private life under wraps, so we’re not sure if she’s married or has a partner. However, despite her discretion, her impact on law and television speaks volumes.
