Writing is not always an easy task. A lot of people seem to have these ideas about writers being able to conjure the perfect words, thoughts and ideas at a drop of a hat. Well, that just isn’t so. Everyone who writes has undoubtedly suffered from the elusive writer’s block. The good news is that no matter how stuck you may be on writing, there are methods you can use to help break down the block.

1. Get Moving!

Though no one knows exactly what the cause of writer’s block may be, one suspicion is that it is due to the lack of blood flow to the brain. To get that blood pumping again, it’s important that that you get up and get moving.

You don’t necessarily have to go on a 6 hour long hike or a strenuous bike ride, but going for a walk outside or even around the building will help you get those creative juices flowing once again. You’ll quickly find that a good walk will leave your mind clearer and all the more creative.

2. Change Locations

Speaking of getting up and getting active, changing your surroundings may be all that you need to change your frame of mind. Walking to an outside park with your laptop or hitting up a local coffee shop with WiFi can very easily do the trick. Just make sure that where ever you are going, you are going there with the intention of one thing: getting your writing done.

3. Mornings Are The Best Time For Writing

Writing got you stuck? Leave it until the next morning. And when you start it the next morning, make sure that you don’t open up your email or check your voicemail – just focus on getting that one piece of writing done. It’s always best to start with the most difficult piece of writing first, and then work your way through the easier pieces.

4. Turn On Some Tunes

As a blogger, one of the best things that will remove that pesky writer’s block is listening to music. Though one’s preference of what type of music to listen to may differ, typically the less vocals there are in a song, the better. Vocals tend to distract the mind and may leave you even more stuck than you were before.

5. Turn Off The Net

Unless you need the internet for a writing assignment, you should turn it off completely so that it is no longer a distraction. All too many writers get caught up with social media sites such as Facebook and Twitter and spend more time writing on those sites than on their assignment. Turn off your website analytics and close your email too. As a matter of fact, you should unplug your Ethernet cable or turn off your WiFi connection in case you fear you may succumb to the lure of the internet.

6. Get Caffeinated

Don’t have time to exercise? Then grabbing yourself a cup of coffee may be the next best thing. It will give your mind that jolt that it may need in order to get past the block. It’s a great idea to get out and go to a local coffee joint rather than make a pot at home, too, since it will change the scenery and get your body moving, even if it’s only for a few minutes.

7. Make An Outline

If you haven’t written down anything yet, it may be a good idea to start brainstorming. Making an outline that includes the main points that you are going to highlight will help you break it down into manageable chunks. It will also give you the opportunity to see if you have any missing points, and you can then fill in the missing sections.

8. Just Start Writing

You don’t even have to be writing about what you’re “supposed” to be writing about! One of the best ways to beat the block is to just start rambling, either on paper or on your computer. You can always find ways while you’re writing about nonsense to try and bring your mind around to writing about what you should be writing about instead. Just one important tip: don’t force it.

9. Read About Anything But Your Subject Matter

Some bloggers and writers mistakenly pick up a book or start reading a blog about what they should be writing about, thinking that they will find inspiration there. You could not be more wrong. This method often just makes the writer’s block even worse and all the more frustrating.

Pick up a magazine, book, or read some online material that is completely different from what you should be writing about. Better yet, read material that is related to a topic that you typically never read or even particularly care for. It may jostle you mind in a different direction and open up the block.

10. Eat And Sleep

Eating is a great way to keep your fingers tapping on the keyboard, but you do have to eat the right stuff. If you’re hitting up fast food joints and eating greasy foods, this will only make your mind all the more sluggish and slow. Grab some fruits and veggies if you really want to kick start your brain. I highly recommend quick foods like grapes, berries, and baby carrots. Keeping some boiled eggs in the fridge or cottage cheese is also a great way to grab some quick protein.

Sleeping is also very important if you want to be able to stop the block. If you’re used to burning the midnight oil, then it’s time to turn off the lights and force yourself to sleep. Most people need a minimum of 7 hours a night, otherwise their mind is not operating at its optimum levels. Try to go to bed earlier and wake up earlier. You will find that you will be writing more efficiently and effectively after just two nights of changing your sleep habits.
