Writing an ebook doesn’t have to be difficult. While it may seem challenging at first, if you plan ahead and use an organized structure, you’ll be done before you know it! Writing will be easier and the finished product will come together without a lot of massive editing. Here’s how to do it!

1. Brainstorm

The first step doesn’t involve any writing at all, actually. Well, unless you count jotting down notes. Before you ever start writing your eBook, you need to sit down and have a brainstorming session with yourself or a group of trusted friends who you can bounce ideas off of. Think about what you want your ebook to include, as well as what you don’t want it to include. How tightly will you niche your product? Instead of writing a book on migraine relief, would you want to specifically target natural migraine relief methods? Niching your eBook may provide you with better marketability in the long run.

2. Write An Outline

Every book – including an ebook – must have a clear beginning, middle and end. If you don’t keep this in mind while writing, chances are, your ideas are going to come out mixed up and all over the place. Writing an outline first is the most essential part of keeping yourself on task and having a finished, marketable product when you’re done.

Divide your book into parts. For example, if you’re writing about natural migraine relief, you might want to divide the book into two sections – migraine relief when you actually have a migraine and migraine prevention strategies. Then, you might want to divide each of those sections into subsections – for example, in the migraine prevention section, you may want to divide it up between supplements, exercise and other topics. Clearly outlining your ebook helps you to know where your book is going as you’re writing it, so you can stay concise and on topic. It will also help you format your ebook into readable sections that people can easily navigate through, which is essential if you want your book to actually sell.

3. Organize Your Ebook

If you were able to write your outline in order, great! That’s one less step you actually have to go through to get your ebook finished. However, many people have ideas that come out in a jumble. That’s okay too, but if this is your case, you’ll want to take an extra step to look at the topics you’re covering in your book and put them in an order that makes sense. For example, if you’re writing a puppy training manual, you may want to cover basic training techniques and using the leash before you tackle advanced techniques.

4. Write Each Section

Once you have all of your topics put together in an outline in the order in which you want them to appear in your book, it’s time to start writing! Not only does having a properly ordered outline keep you focused and on task, it also helps you to break down the writing into manageable chunks. Writing pages and pages without direction can be time consuming and frustrating! It’s also easy to procrastinate if you only know you’re going to write on a particular day, but you don’t know what you’re going to write about. If you have an outline, you can set a goal to tackle two topics on the outline and then call it a day. Having a clear starting point and an ending point will help your brain stay on topic and help keep you from burning out.

5. Edit, Edit, Edit

Once you’ve gotten your entire book written out, you should be able to go back and edit it fairly quickly. This is another reason that using an outline and proper formatting can be exceptionally useful. It not only makes your ebook easier for people to read, it makes it easier for you to edit! Editing through huge blocks of text can be tough and you’ll likely miss more mistakes than if you have smaller blocks of text and clear headlines to edit.

Above all, writing an ebook should be fun and allow you to use your creativity. If at any point you feel like it is a burden or if you are getting frustrated, put it aside and come back to it at another time. If you write while you’re frustrated or when you have a mental block, it will come out in the text.

Relax and have fun with your ebook! It is your creation – make it totally, uniquely you!
