Free WordPress themes are a great choice for new bloggers.  If you want your blog to really stand out, then here’s how to find GREAT free WordPress themes!

Sure, some are “okay,” but most of these themes are being used by other WordPress users too. If you want your blog to stand out and really get attention, then you’re going to want to find a great theme for your blog that isn’t available through WordPress themes.

And here’s the good news – it doesn’t have to cost you an arm and a leg to find a great theme. As a matter of fact, you can find a ton of fantastic themes online for free. We’ll go over which ones are the best so you’ll know where you’ll want to go when you’re ready to give your blog a makeover.

1. Wordspop

What’s really appealing about Wordspop is that it has a whole lot of totally different themes available for you to choose from. Not all of them are free, but a good handful of them are. There are a number of different themes, like the BigSquare theme for those who have a photoblog, or the Beeback theme for those who are putting their blog under construction (this is a great theme to throw up on your blog while you’re looking for a better theme!). Fotofolio landscape is a theme that any photographer would love to use, and yes… it’s absolutely free. You may love it so much that one day you upgrade to the Fotofolio2 (which is, unfortunately, a theme you have to pay for).

2. Revolt-theme.com

Feel like expressing yourself on your blog and showing off your attitude? Then Revolt-theme.com is definitely for you. This blog theme allows you to upload a picture of your head, and then any message that you write will appear as being written on a piece of cardboard which is tied around your neck. Not only is it incredibly unique, but it comes with a lot of different plugins that you can use to further enhance your WordPress blog.

This free theme is highly recommended for anyone who wants a blog that really stands out and has a point of view that really needs to be shared.

3. PolarMedia

Polar Media will work best for anyone who has a personal website, or for anyone who wants to create a news portal. All of your most recent or featured blogs and articles can quickly and easily be put front and center on the first page of your blog. It’s easy to navigate and completely user friendly.

You also have a lot of control over how the page appears. For example, you can completely customize the fonts that you have on your theme, thanks to the integrated Google Fonts tool. It also doesn’t use any foreign or unused code, so this theme loads of quickly and easily on all browsers. You can download the “starter edition” and still have a great looking WordPress theme for free!

4. iCreativeLabs

iCreativeLabs has created one of our favorite free themes, the Kelontong “e-Commerce” theme. This is a great theme for anyone who is opening up their very own online store. The design is, as icreativelabs.com describes it, “sleek and simple.” It’s compatible with a ton of browsers, and the coding that is used for this theme will allow you complete control over the theme.

That’s right, you can customize literally everything about this theme.

The layout is simple, so any visitors won’t find it complicated or cumbersome to navigate. It looks incredibly professional, and it comes along with a Javascript slideshow – a fantastic feature for anyone who’s trying to sell items online. There’s a widget sidebar, a products search, and you can include things like “newest product” or “most popular product” to your theme. These aren’t all of the features that come along with it, so visit the icreativelabs.com website for more information on the Kelontong WordPress theme.

5. Pengbo

Pengbo is definitely worth mentioning when it comes to free WordPress themes. Pengbo offers a number of great themes, but we’ll talk about our three favorite here.

If you’re looking for a theme for a more personal blog, then you will definitely want to check out the GreenieWP theme. It’s clean, it’s SEO friendly, and it’s easy to add images to the custom field. There is also a ready-to-use contact form available with the theme, which is handy if you’re running a business on the web.

Now for the next Pengbo theme. The Inspiration V0.2 is a good theme for almost anyone for any reason – whether for personal use or business use, you’ll enjoy it. It’s not as customizable as a lot of the other themes, so it can be somewhat limiting. But the clean appearance and the user-friendly interface make it a top pick.

6. Aurelius Vo.2

Last but not least, the Aurelius V0.2 theme is definitely a hit amongst those bloggers who are “in the know”. This theme offers a ton of great features, such as:

  • The ability to display the four most recent blogs on the frontpage
  • The ability to use timthumb to help generate the best thumb images for both your blog and your portfolio
  • An easy way to add share links like Reddit, Digg and Delicious

Pengbo as a whole is very good at fixing any bugs that may come up with these themes, so if you are having a problem with any aspect of a blog theme, let them know. There’s a good chance they’ve already investigated it and have a fix that you can easily implement.

Smashing Multimedia Theme

If you’re into video, photography and/or podcasting, Smashing Multimedia Theme is totally for you. This theme comes with a parent theme, along with a “child” theme that you can fully customize. The media that you choose to upload is easily embedded, you can choose the type of splash image that you want for your media posts, you can choose the type of post teaser that you want to set up, and you can feature absolutely any post in any category with this theme. It’s professional in appearance and looks more expensive than it is (which is, of course, FREE!).
